SCENE Loch Lomond Jetty Repair Project

Location: Scottish Centre for Ecology and the Natural Environment, Field Station, Loch Lomond, East Shore
Zone: 5

Project Overview:

Situated amidst Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, the Scottish Centre for Ecology and the Natural Environment (SCENE) is a pioneering teaching and research facility that has been established since 1946 and committed to understanding the mechanisms that govern the natural world and the impact that humans impose.

In 2026 a project was undertaken at SCENE as the jetty at Loch Lomond required repair due to deterioration. This was having an impact on access for teaching and research activities.

Initial advice suggested a full replacement of the jetty, with a floating jetty solution. However, a floating jetty would not have been a suitable replacement for this location on a year-round basis due to anchoring requirements and exposure to high winds, similar installations are typically removed over winter periods to avoid storm damage.

Our team approached the National Park Authority to identify specialist marine contractors with relevant experience in jetty refurbishment works, which led to direct engagement with a suitable contractor who had previously undertaken a similar project on the timber jetty in at Luss Village.

Progress was monitored through regular site visits and reporting including photographic and drone surveys.
The works were successfully delivered within a short programme, restoring safe and functional access to the jetty.
